Other than Rogers (who we never do business with), no other organization (even ones we're still customers of) sends us as much spam snail mail as AARP. It has been THREE YEARS since that free trial membership ended and we still get spammed at the same ridiculous level (no they don't have our email.) We never paid them a cent and never will.Īfter our year was up, the mailings got WORSE! Maybe weekly a nagging reminder to renew (we won't), and of course more of the aforementioned offers of credit card, life insurance, car insurance, home insurance, mobile phone. We only cross the border once a month at most so every time we went to our box it would be just stuffed with AARP junk. We did get the one year membership, during which time, every week we'd get 1 or 2 pieces of junk mail, they seemed to have a rotation between credit card, life insurance, car insurance, home insurance, mobile phone, and membership renewal. So we thought, what the hell, we'll just never pay them and never give them credit info so they can't "negative option renew" us, and we could take advantage of the discounts the membership card gave you. One time RiteAid had a promo where you mail in your receipt with a completed form and you got a free 1 year membership to AARP. Just wait until one of those places sells your name to other charities.įor those of you who have mailboxes in the USA (UPS Store or equivalent), the second worst offender has got to be AARP. For the rest of your life they keep on wasting their time, money and Trees in sending you forms, letters asking for more ! I haven't given them a penny in the last 6-7 years, but they don't bother getting the hint, by now they should have removed me from their data base ! Imagine you do a one time donation to Red Cross or a hospital or TVO online and that's it. Now all 3 of them relentlessly send me letters with my name on it for more donations ! By now they must have wasted all the money I gave them in postage alone ! Because they are considered charities and my name is on the donation solicitation letters, I don't think I can stop it either ! I just donated it online as a one time payment maybe 2-3 times in total ( not recurring or automatic payments ). I no longer donate to them and have no intention of donating to them. The other big mistake I did was I donated to Red Cross Canada, TVO ( ON TV channel ) and a Hospital a few times long back. I mean $10/week to NOT have to do the work? I left for 3 months and it cost me $120 to get a nice big pile of junk mail to throw out. I've done it once and it's just a big waste of money, never doing that again. Sometimes I am out of the country for 2 months and there is no one to check the mail for me, and I am afraid that occasional important letter I might get once a month or so, will go missing or thrown out because of this junk filling my box.įor the time you are away, this may help you. Winter is especially bad they barely remove the snow and ice on the side walk leading to the post box. This crap fills up my box quickly and I am afraid some important letter will be thrown out, as there is NO space to put it in. I barely check my mail, like once a month or so, as almost everything is online. Its at least 50 meters away from my house. The problem is, my mail box is one of those small community boxes. Any addressed admail that doesn't say "return postage guaranteed" will get thrown out. And don't bother trying to return to sender. Take solace in the fact that they are paying postage. They are sending it because they want business from someone they hope is a new owner.
